Levothyroxine is a replacement for a hormone that is normally produced by your thyroid gland to regulate the body's energy and metabolism. Levothyroxine is recommended when the thyroid does not produce enough of this hormone on its own.
Levothyroxine treats hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone). Levothyroxine is also used to treat or prevent goiter (enlarged thyroid gland), which can be caused by hormone imbalances, radiation treatment, surgery, or cancer.
Levothyroxine should not be used to treat obesity or weight problems.
Levothyroxine comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It usually is taken once a day on an empty stomach, 1/2 to 1 hour before breakfast . Take levothyroxine exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
Take strictly in accordance with your Doctors’ advice
Levothyroxine may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.
